JUNIOR sections at several Stockport cricket clubs are set for a bumper summer thanks to the efforts of Cheshire’s Development and Coaching Officer Gavin Colebourn.

Marple Cricket Club in particular has seen a swell of new starters after nearby Rose Hill Primary School was selected to participate in a schools’ coaching programme funded by Chance to Shine.

“I could not be happier with the success of the programme and how the children have developed a real enthusiasm for cricket, which I share myself,” said Rose Hill teacher Jo Batt.

“Many of our children have started to play for Marple Cricket Club, including several girls, who realised they had a desire to play on a regular basis.

“Gavin Colebourn has motivated the staff and children with his energy and passion and has taught the children many new skills, which are developing all the time.

“I would like to thank everyone involved, especially Gavin for his complete commitment and motivation and Marple Cricket Club for their continued support.

Jo added: “Our staff have always spoken incredibly highly of the skills, games and techniques Gavin uses and there is no better professional development than watching someone of Gavin’s experience working with your children.”

Staff members at nearby Romiley Primary School were equally grateful for the additional professional training offered by the Cheshire Cricket Board and Chance to Shine.

“The staff here have enjoyed the chance to learn from Gavin’s knowledge and have taken notes to use in their own planning,” revealed Louise Hancock, Year Two teacher.

“It was a really good exercise in Professional Development for them.

“The Teaching Assistants have equally enjoyed the sessions and have encouraged their children to take part in an after-school cricket club.

“The children look forward to the lessons every week and have enjoyed expanding their knowledge of the game.

Louise added: “Other children have found hidden talents and an enjoyment of a game that they would otherwise have thought dull. They were thrilled to hear that there would be further opportunities this half term.”
